Guns out of hand

Gun Free South Africa

What happens when guns get into the wrong hands?

Challenge

We created a mini-documentary series “Guns out of Hand” with Gun Free South Africa to show the irreparable and irreversible impact guns out of hand have on the lives and communities they pierce, challenging myths about gun ownership and inspiring action to stop gun violence.

Experience

The story follows three family’s stories of how gun murders have shattered their lives. From the private schools of Northern Johannesburg to the ganglands of Hanover Park in the Western Cape to show how guns are out of hand in South Africa.
Gun Free South Africa’s work with KNOWN has been a pleasure. Despite the heavy nature of the subject at hand, KNOWN was always up to the challenge – informed and knowledgeable, considerate and moving with the utmost care, even when it wasn’t convenient. The agency ensured that the process did not further hurt those we interviewed, but rather acted as a platform for healing, and one of mutual learning for both GFSA and KNOWN. The work is not simple or straightforward, but it was done well, with thought and intention at every step. It was lovely to work with the team.”
